The Do’s & Don’ts of exporting to Italy

There are specific goods that can be exported to Italy free of charge, or at a reduced cost, or without restriction. On the other hand, there are items that are not permitted to be imported at all, or face heavy restrictions when doing so.

Items that are free to import into Italy include :

• Tobacco – this includes; cigarettes, cigarillos, cigars and smoking tobacco in limited quantities
• Alcohol
• Personal currency, but funds of over €10,000 must be declared at customs.
• Medicines for personal use that are to be used within 30 days
• Personal items of a non-commercial nature, that are worth less than €430.

Items that are prohibited from being imported into Italy :

• Fake and counterfeit goods
• Drugs and other intoxicating substances

Possessions that are restricted when importing into Italy, and face further measures :

• Pets including cats, dogs and ferrets need to have a valid passport and must be fully vaccinated.
• Other pets including birds and tortoises must be accompanied by a health certificate.
• Endangered plants and animals that are protected require special protected species permits.
• Cultural goods require declaration and an import certificate from the Ministry of Cultural Heritage, Activities and Tourism.
• Weapons and firearms require special authorisation from the police and the public order office.
